My family first discovered the fun of the Kindness Rocks Project about a month ago while walking through a local park. We found a beautifully painted rock hidden along the path and then ended up finding several more during our walk. Each rock had instructions painted on the back telling us to “Keep or re-hide” and also to post a picture to the rock group’s Facebook page. I immediately looked the group up, posted our finds and we were hooked! We discovered that this particular rock group was very active in placing rocks at several different parks in our area. We went out the next morning and found even more! Since that first rock we found a month ago we have found close to 70 rocks!

Initially, my girls wanted to keep them all but they soon discovered that re-hiding them for others to find was just as much fun. They loved the idea of making other people as happy as they are each time they discover one!
Some of the rocks we’ve found are serious works of art and they make me smile every time I see them! We’ve been so impressed with the beautiful artwork and it has inspired us to start painting our own so we can continue to spread the kindness.
Now that we have a few of our own painted, we can go out and hide them then track when they are found on Facebook.
Another one of our favorite things about looking for Kindness rocks is getting to experience the beauty of the parks in our area, some of which we had never been to before. We’ve seen so much wildlife as well as many gorgeous sunsets! The girls love getting out to enjoy nature and it’s been a fun and healthy activity for all of us!
Kindness Rocks Tips
If you have not yet caught the Kindness Rocks bug, here are some tips to get you started:
- Check for rock groups in your area by checking the map on The Kindness Rocks Project website. You can also search Facebook for groups in your city or county. (Popular groups in our area include Chandler Kindness Rocks, Mesa-Gilbert Rocks, and Maricopa County Rocks)
- Once you find and join a Facebook group, read through their rules then scroll through the posts to get tips on where members are hiding and finding rocks in your area
- When looking for rocks, pay attention to your surroundings. Rocks can be hidden next to or in trees, at the base of benches and posts, slightly under shrubs, on signs, etc
- Make sure you don’t hide rocks in areas that are prohibited. In many areas, this includes inside businesses and in State and National parks
- When painting rocks be sure to use rocks that are not taken from private property or from prohibited areas like State and National parks. If you are unable to find rocks that are large enough to paint you can always buy rock kits that include all the supplies you need on Amazon or from any craft store. You can also look for bags of rocks at Home Depot or on Amazon
- Use acrylic paints and paint pens that you can find on Amazon or at Wal-Mart or any craft store
- Label your rocks on the back so people will know where to post the pictures once they’ve been found. Many rock groups have pre-printed labels that you can attach with Modge Podge
- Seal your rocks with a spray paint sealer before hiding them
- Get out, enjoy nature and have fun
